Mohamed Salah named as ‘top choice’ to replace Real Madrid legend with Liverpool contact expected

The window may be shut, but a huge Liverpool transfer development is unfolding with Mohamed Salah attracting serious interest.

Since he came back from AFCON, Salah’s Liverpool form has been disappointing.

There was that picture-perfect free-kick against Qarabag and a tidy assist against Newcastle at the weekend, but his overall play is far closer to his pre-AFCON levels than the form he hit at the tournament.

The Egyptian has long been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, and it could be on the cards for the summer judging by the latest reports.

Al Ittihad want Mohamed Salah to replace Karim Benzema

With how much money Salah is on, any transfer proposal would have to come from a club with the cash to pay him.

Al Ittihad certainly fall into that category, and the recent departure of Karim Benzema means there is definitely space on the payroll to make this marquee move happen.

Saudi Arabian outlet WinWin have revealed that Salah is Al Ittihad’s ‘top choice’ to replace the Real Madrid legend. He has been a priority in their eyes for ‘some time’, and they are expected to make an approach to Liverpool ‘in the coming weeks’.

We discussed the Saudi side shortly before the deadline, recommending Liverpool to move for Moussa Diaby. The former Aston Villa winger almost went to Inter, but no agreement could be reached before the deadline.

If the Reds are going to do business with Al Ittihad, there could be scope for a swap.

Liverpool should cash in on Mo Salah

No matter what happens during his remaining time at Anfield, Salah will go down as one of the greatest to wear a Liverpool shirt — and to grace the Premier League.

But his levels have dropped massively from last season, and this summer will be the last chance to get a fee for him.

Barring a late-season resurgence, it’s a brutal call Liverpool should make.

His age is the biggest factor here, but it also feels like he is out of energy. A new challenge might be what’s best for him, and a fresh face out on the right might be what’s best for Arne Slot’s side.
