Denzel Dumfries came back into the Liverpool mix this week after injuries forced the Reds to explore new defensive signings.
After a fairly uneventful month of January, it looks like being a busy conclusion to the transfer window at Anfield.
As well as Dumfries, Liverpool are in talks with Lutsharel Geertruida, another Dutch defender who Arne Slot knows well from Feyenoord. Galatasaray’s Rolland Sallai is also being considered.
Who could be Liverpool’s short-term right-back transfer fix?
A few different options for the Reds, but the Inter star might not be one anymore after what President Giuseppe Marotta just said.
Inter president rules out Denzel Dumfries move and takes a dig at Liverpool
Dumfries is currently injured, and so a move was never highly likely. Now, though, it sounds unfeasible.
That’s judging by Marotta’s words to Sky Sports Italy ahead of Inter vs Cremonese.
He remarked: “Impromptu phone calls bordering on unfairness, nothing is true. He’ll stay with us.”

What exactly he means by unfair is hard to know. Perhaps he is referring to Inter’s rumoured interest in Curtis Jones going the other way — an idea Slot firmly dismissed.
Whatever the case, it sounds like Dumfries can be scratched off Liverpool’s deadline day shortlist.
Geertruida or bust for Liverpool now
Despite links to Sallai, they are in such vague terms that it feels unlikely an agreement is close.
Liverpool are battling Chelsea for Jeremy Jacquet, but that would be a summer move.
How would you feel if Liverpool sign Lutsharel Geertruida?
Talks are underway!
Therefore, if Liverpool are to address the holes in their defence before Monday night’s deadline, it feels like Geertruida is their last chance.
The player is keen, so it’s just a case of making arrangements with Sunderland and RB Leipzig to cut the current loan short. Perhaps Jurgen Klopp can pull some strings.
